This is the second episode of the eBASE Learning Series, and it features the newly published paper:

Fotso et al. (2026). Preconditions for Learning in the Lake Chad Basin. Frontiers in Education.

Drawing on evidence from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, the study explores the realities that shape learning beyond the classroom. Through 39 Key Informant Interviews and 5 Focus Group Discussions, the research highlights how factors such as hunger, transportation challenges, teacher welfare, social norms, and inadequate infrastructure influence learners’ ability to engage and succeed in school.

The findings challenge narrow approaches to learning poverty that focus exclusively on pedagogy and classroom interventions. Instead, they demonstrate that educational outcomes are deeply influenced by the broader conditions in which children learn, and teachers work.

The webinar will provide an opportunity to discuss the implications of these findings for education systems, humanitarian responses, and policies aimed at improving learning outcomes across the Lake Chad Basin and similar contexts.

Objectives

The webinar aims to:

  • Share key findings from the publication with a regional and global audience.
  • Explore the conditions that shape learning outcomes in conflict-affected and resource-constrained settings.
  • Facilitate dialogue between researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and development partners.
  • Reflect on practical and policy responses to the barriers identified in the study.
  • Promote evidence-informed approaches to addressing learning poverty.
